Beautylish Lucky Bag 2019 Unboxing & Review

Products in this post were purchased by me from Beautylish.

After a few years of curiosity (and constantly forgetting about the sale date), I finally took the plunge and ordered my first Beautylish Lucky Bag!

What is a Beautylish Lucky Bag?

If you’ve never heard of the Beautylish Lucky Bag, here’s some info on the 2019 bags from the Beautylish site:

Lucky Bags are mystery bags of beauty products (plus extra surprises if you’re really lucky). This year, we’re offering four types of Lucky Bags:

• Original Lucky Bag ($75 for $150+ of products)
• Lucky Bag XL ($150 for $350+ of products; available in the U.S. only)
• Get One, Give One (buy one Original Lucky Bag at $150 and we’ll donate two more Lucky Bags to teens at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital)
• Jeffree Star Cosmetics Lucky Bag ($75 for $150+ of JSC products)

Lucky Bags are filled at random, so there’s no way to know what your bag will contain—it’s a surprise! Rest assured that your Lucky Bag will include $150 or more of products. All XL Lucky Bags will include $350+ worth of products.

The Lucky Bag Process

I received an email on December 17th to sign up for early access. Doing so allowed you to purchase Lucky Bags an hour before they’re available to the public. The Lucky Bags were set to go on sale on December 26th at 9am with early access (10am without). I wrote it down in my calendar and set my alarm to remind me 10 minutes before the sale started. I was not going to miss out this year!

Lucky Bag morning finally arrived. I had originally planned on purchasing the Lucky Bag XL, but I made the mistake of hesitating a few seconds. Within that brief moment, the XL bag that was in my cart sold out. So, word of advice, if you’re set on getting a Lucky Bag XL make sure you go into release day with your eyes on the prize! I quickly went back to order the Original Lucky Bag, and waited patiently for delivery day.

The Lucky Bag finally arrived on January 22nd.

While there were some items I felt a little unsure about (I’m not really one for lip toppers or glitter), I was very exited for a couple of items that were included. I was hoping that my Lucky Bag would have a Natasha Denona Palette (I recently purchased the Gold Palette and love it). Luckily, it did, and with a color scheme I would definitely use on a regular basis! I also had my fingers crossed for a Wayne Goss Brush, since I don’t own any and have always wanted to try them, so that was a lovely surprise (although I would have enjoyed a different type of brush a little more).

Even though the Stila and Jouer sets aren’t my cup of tea, it does give me a chance to try things I wouldn’t normally get. I do have to admit, a part of me has been curious about the Stila eyeshadows for a while now since everyone raves about how good they are. I’ve also been really into skincare this past year, and I’m almost out of my Glossier Milky Cleanser so the Farmacy Clean Bee came at a good time. I need to see if I can incorporate the Good Molecules Peptide Serum into my current skincare regimen, but it’s nice to get a preview of a new line that’s about to launch.

* During the time of this post, the Good Molecules brand has yet to launch. Because of this I couldn’t find a retail price for the Peptide Serum. Their landing page says “See a difference in your skin starting at $6”. Apparently, they will be selling “solutions that make a difference for your skin concern, at a price anyone can afford.” I will update the price as soon as the Peptide Serum is available to purchase, but for now, I’ll leave the price as ≥$6.

The Original Lucky Bag costs $75 (not including shipping). The retail total of all the products I received was $171, which equals a savings of $96, or about a 56% discount.

Would I purchase a Lucky Bag again?

I’m not sure. While the total savings on all the products is great, I did receive a couple of items in my bag that I don’t know if I’d use (Jouer Lip Toppers). I would, however, purchase some of the items myself at their regular prices (I’m looking at you Natasha Denona Palette). In the end, I think my Lucky Bag curiosity may have been satiated this year. I can rest easy knowing I tried it. I do, however, want to try the Lucky Bag XL once and see how that goes.

Final thoughts

Overall, it was an exciting first experience! If you love beauty products, skincare and surprises, like trying new things, aren’t picky, and have realistic expectations, I would definitely recommend trying out a Beautylish Lucky Bag at least once. It’s probably one of the best mystery boxes I’ve tried.

Are you planning on trying the Beautylish Lucky Bags? Did you get this year’s Lucky Bag or Lucky Bag XL? If so, what did you get?
